Impact on the Organization

In today’s modern and technically advanced manufacturing operations, accurate communication is necessary to ensure successful end products. Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) provides a mechanical drawing standard and effective method of communication between design, engineering, manufacturing, and quality. The discipline that GD&T provides impacts product cost, quality, and customer satisfaction, and plays an important role in the success of an organization.

This course begins with an overview, and then covers application of position tolerance measurement and limits of size methods, and form tolerances for configurations such as flatness, straightness and roundness.  Orientation tolerances are also discussed, for perpendicular, parallel and profile views of various items.  Profile and position tolerances are covered, as are co-axial, symmetrical and concentric applications.

Recommended prerequisites are Blueprint Reading Essentials and Shop Math.

Learning Objectives

  • In GD&T Part I, participants learn Symbols, Boundaries, Virtual Condition, Basic Dimensions, Feature Control Frames and General Rules
  • GD&T Part II covers Form Tolerances, Orientation Tolerances, Boundary Control, and Free-State Variation
  • GD&T Part III covers Concentricity, Symmetry, Position I
  • GD&T Part IV covers Position II, Composite Positioning, Form and Orientation Tolerances, Hole Patterns, Coaxial Features, and Past Practices
